Location
Mt. Ruapehu is the highest mountain in the North Island and is situated in the Tongariro National Park, the oldest national park in New Zealand. Ski Areas
Mt. Ruapehu has three main ski areas – Whakapapa, Turoa, and Tukino. Whakapapa ski area is located on the northern slopes of Mt. Ruapehu and is the largest ski resort in New Zealand. It features a variety of terrain suitable for all levels, including terrain parks, a snowplay area, and a wide range of groomed runs. There is also a great variety of accommodation options and a large number of ski and snowboard schools in the area.
Turoa is located on the south side of the mountain and is renowned for its steep and challenging terrain. This area has the highest lift in New Zealand and offers a variety of terrain for experienced skiers and boarders. Tukino is a small ski area on the eastern side of the mountain, ideal for beginner skiers and snowboarders. It has a variety of beginner and intermediate runs, and a snow play area. It is also the closest ski area to Wellington.
